Industrial romance in Västerås
What happens when you take an old 18 floors tall steam power plant in Västerås, throw in some really nice interior and a bunch of fireplaces? You get a really nice hotel, that’s what happens.
Just like most people, we too get caught up in the daily life, but we’re working hard to maintain a healthy work and life balance. If you’ve read the post about our visit to Oaxen you already know about our monthly date nights, and this time it was Fabian’s turn to make the plans. However, he took it one step further and turned it into a date weekend. Since we got engaged on New Year’s Eve, this was like a mini honeymoon. After packing an overnight bag, we jumped on the train heading to Västerås and the Steam Hotel.
The hotel is right by the water of lake Mälaren in an old steam power plant, so if you’re into industrial design, this is definitely the place for you. This building that once was one of the largest energy producers is now a wonderful design hotel with exposed brick walls and untouched boilers and pipes everywhere, accompanied with luxurious items such as big chandeliers. They did certainly not hold back when it came to paying attention to details.
The restaurant on the top floor offered a spectacular view of Västerås and the lake. This was the opening week of their new concept, which gives them a get out of jail free card for not having had the time to perfect their routines, but the food was still great. Interesting ingredients and flavors, all done with an Asian twist. Before we went home we had lunch on the ground floor, and it was by far one of the best vegetarian meals we’ve had in a long time.
The only thing that was a bit disappointing was the breakfast buffé. Eating a hotel breakfast is supposed to be one of the highlights of the stay, so it’s too bad that they fell on the finish line with this one. It should be an easy thing to fix, so we can only hope they have improved it until next time because we’re definitely coming back.
Head to the spa
The spa was nice and modern—almost too modern. If you’re looking for a nice relaxing time, we strongly recommend you to avoid the busy hours. During our visit, the outdoor pool was unfortunately closed due to falling icicles. This meant the indoor pool was just a bit too crowded and didn’t really give you the calming tranquility that comes with a spa. They do however have a quiet area, where you lay on big cozy beds in front of a big fireplace. It can’t really get much better than that.
